About DPSFF
Dear Friends:

Political arguments can get ugly.

That's not the best way to grow intellectually, though, and it's not the approach taken at the Donald & Paula Smith Family Foundation's public debates.

The Foundation recognizes that most of us share the common goal of a peaceful, prosperous, happy society -- regardless of our place on the political spectrum. Any faction willing to engage in reasonable debate with its opponents tends to be motivated by good will, and more often than not has at least some insights that can benefit us all.

That's why, since late 2001, the Foundation has brought together prominent thinkers -- pundits, politicians, ambassadors, economic analysts, scientists, and more -- at debates on topics ranging from environmentalism to the American military's proper role overseas. The Foundation also hosts public policy luncheons, speeches by noted political humorists, and other functions.

We hope the Donald & Paula Smith Family Foundation's audiences -- themselves a rich cross-section of intellectuals, students, and politically-active citizens -- will come away from our events just a bit more inclined to listen carefully, disagree respectfully, and still debate vigorously.

Yes, political arguments can get ugly, but an informative, intelligent debate can also be something beautiful. I hope you'll agree.

Cordially,

Donald Smith
